چکیده

Fitzpatrick Skin Type, Individual Typology Angle, andMelanin Index in anAfrican Population: Steps TowardUniversally Applicable Skin Photosensitivity Assessments Calculation of the individual typology angle (ITA) based on spectrophotometric measurements has been used to classify skin types into 6 physiologically relevant groups: very light, light, intermediate, tan, brown, and dark.1,2 This study directly compares ITAvalueswith themelanin index (MI),which is frequently used in assigning Fitzpatrick skin type (FST),3 to improve understanding of how these measurements correlatewhenused in a study that primarily includes participants with FSTs V and VI.

Trihydroxybenzoic acid glucoside as a global skin color modulator and photo-protectant.

BACKGROUND 3,4,5-Trihydroxybenzoic acid glucoside (THBG), a molecule produced by an original biocatalysis-based technology, was assessed in this study with respect to its skin photoprotective capacity and its skin color control property on Asian-type skin at a clinical level and on skin explant culture models. METHODS The double-blinded clinical study was done in comparison to a vehicle by th...

Overall skin tone and skin-lightening-improving effects with oral supplementation of lutein and zeaxanthin isomers: a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

PURPOSE Carotenoids, especially lutein and zeaxanthin isomers (L/Zi), filter blue light and protect skin from environmental factors including high-energy sources. These carotenoids may be able to block the formation of melanin pathways, decrease cytokines, and increase antioxidants. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial over a 12-week suppl...

Measuring skin cancer risk in African Americans: is the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Classification Scale culturally sensitive?

OBJECTIVE Fitzpatrick's Skin Type Classification Scale often is used to assess sun sensitivity and skin cancer risk. Because the scale was developed with Whites, its utility and validity with Blacks may be limited by its reliance on the European-cultural terms suntan and sunburn. We tested the hypothesis that most Blacks would be unable to classify their skin into the four Fitzpatrick skin type...

Pigment protection factor as a predictor of skin photosensitivity--a Polish study.

Assessment of individual photosensitivity by determining the minimal erythema dose (MED) is commonly accepted. MED objectively describes a single individual response to the irradiation of skin with a particular wavelength (UVB, UVA). Pigment protection factor (PPF) is an objective value to measure skin type. The aim of the project was to analyze PPF values in the population of Lodz and the rela...

Skin weathering and ashiness in black Africans.

Ashiness describes a common physiological skin condition that may develop in people with dark skin complexion. Environmental influences, particularly cold and dry weather, seem obvious. This condition has seldom been studied so far. In the present study, skin ashiness was assessed in 37 black African women by means of colorimetric assessments and xerosis ratings. Colour changes were measured by...
